Popular and Scenic Tourist Routes

* Twin Coast Discovery Highway - drive north out of Auckland up the east coast through Northland and return south via the west coast.

* Pacific Coast Highway - travel south from Auckland through the Bay of Plenty, around the East Cape to Napier.

* Thermal Explorer Highway - from Auckland head south to Rotorua and Lake Taupo through the geothermal active centre of the North Island to Napier.

* Classic New Zealand Wine Trail - to complete this tourist route you will have to cross Cook Strait between Wellington and Picton. Starting in Napier travel to Hastings, Woodville, Masterton, Martinborough, Wellington, Picton and finally Blenheim through some of New Zealand's finest wine-making regions.

* Alpine Pacific Triangle - this route is confined to the scenic pleasures of North Canterbury. Head north east from thermal Hanmer Springs to Kaikoura with it's whale watching and then south to Waipara where you will encounter more wine tasting and fine food.

* Foothills Scenic Route - travel from Amberley to Winchester near Timaru. This road goes through the Canterbury Plains, between the east coast and the Southern Alps.

* Great Alpine Highway - travel west from Christchurch on Highway 73 over the Southern Alps via Arthurs Pass to Kumara Junction on the West Coast.

* Southern Scenic Route - from Dunedin head south down SH1 to Invercargill and view the Catlins on the way, head west to Riverton and then north to Te Anau.
